Three children playing with two dogs

This week in Minjilang, West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sport and Recreation (YSR) program received generous donations from ‘Kitbag for Kids’ which were given out to the kids in community. It was so good to see little happy faces running around with new footy shirts on. Thank you to ‘Kitbag for Kids’!

The YSR team would also like to welcome Etitera, who has lived at Minjilang for a long time, to the team. All the kids are very excited and looking forward to new and exciting programs and activities run by Sophia and Etitera.
The kids have been very engaged in activities, including playing with plastercene recently. They loved experimenting with plastercene and it was great to see them coming up with their own designs.  The YSR team have been taking the kids to the basketball court in the afternoons to play a game which was then followed by a game with the older youth.

As Kurrung is fast approaching, Minjilang have also received their training gear and will commence training soon!

Kylinda is also one of our upcoming Youth Leaders with the Church Group mentoring our youths and also in her spare time does volunteering at youth, sport and recreation.

WARC is excited to have both Kylinda and Jenny on our team. Female Community Safety Officers are important to our communities to provide a culturally safe environment.

People of West Arnhem attending the community safety forum

Recently, West Arnhem Regional Council’s (WARC) senior and experienced Community Safety team members travelled to Jabiru from across West Arnhem to attend the inaugural Community Safety Forum.

The Forum was held over 3 days to train in all things Community Safety, and for our teams to come together to discuss challenges, issues, and solutions for the Community Safety team.

The forum was organised by Tamzin France and Kellum France and their efforts must be mentioned and recognised; their contributions were exceptional.    The group were addressed by the CEO and A/DoOG who gave messages concerning the value to the organisation and Communities of the Night Patrol.

This was the inaugural forum for this group and it was obvious from the matters discussed, the building of comradery and the first time for the entire group meet their colleagues in Jabiru from the other sections on Council.

The feedback from the group has been terrific and we look forward to the continuation of these meetings into the future.

The team worked tirelessly over the 3 days brainstorming ideas and suggestions.  It was wonderful to see our teams bring their years of experience, care for their communities and fresh ideas to discuss solutions for very real issues faced every day in their communities

Training topics saw the team engage and train together, and covered data collection, mandatory reporting, community engagement and induction.

The Forum team continue to work together to create a Community Safety handbook for WARC staff.  They also created and implemented an agreement for all current and new staff to sign to work with Community Safety in our communities.

We had a special birthday surprise for one of our staff members and, to finish off the training, we all went on the Guluyambi cultural cruise.

Kakadu Triathlon winners

More than 150 people turned out to participate in and celebrate the 2023 Kakadu Triathlon on Saturday, 29 April.
Celebrating 10 years of the triathlon this year, it was fantastic to see so many people come to Jabiru to take on the challenge of the open and junior triathlons and the inaugural 5km Kakadu Challenge Run.

To reflect on the 10 year anniversary, an event founding member Andy Ralph gave a special speech about the history of the triathlon which started in 2013. There was also past event memorabilia on display, and the 2023 event singlets design were replicated from the original design in 2014.

Coordinated by West Arnhem Regional Council, the triathlon continues to get bigger and better with the added Colour Fun Run around the Jabiru Lake which was held before the triathlon.  The major sponsors of the colour run were ALPA and NBN and all fund raised were donated to CareFlight. We wish to thank the generous sponsors and the incredible volunteers and organisations who assisted.
The total amount of money raised from both the Kakadu Triathlon and the Colour Run this year was $18,103. There were also special prizes for the individuals who raised the most money, donated by Kakadu Tourism.
A huge thank you to the race director Lucas Hayden and race officials Gary Wall, Tim Ellison, Lucy Berk, Darwin Triathlon Club and Triathlon NT.

An extra special thank you to all of the incredible volunteers, the CareFlight team and Chris Garner, Police and Emergency Services, and also a very big thank you to the Council pool staff and works crew.

This event wouldn’t be possible without the generous sponsors and supporters: West Arnhem Regional Council, Blueridge Engineering, ERA, EDL, Veolia, NORTRUSS, Dig Hard Excavations, Darwin Triathlon Club, Sodexo, Intensity Sports, the Crocodile Hotel, Triathlon NT, NBN, Peter Keepence Photography, ALPA, Kakadu Tourism, Kakadu National Park and Puma.

In Maningrida, the morning of ANZAC Day started with a drizzle of rain and a lovely service attended by many people.
Afterwards, attendees enjoyed bacon and egg rolls prepared by WARC staff members, Debbie and Rani, and ANZAC biscuits cooked by Debbie and Cathy with tea and coffee.
While eating our bacon and egg rolls the skies opened up with heavy rain just to remind us what the soldier went through.
