Sport and Recreation Services

Community Engagement

The Youth, Sport and Recreation (YSR) team is present in all the West Arnhem communities.

The role of the team is to provide engaging programs for the residents while also building social capacity within the communities. This is achieved through the employment and training of community members, skill enhancement and nurturing community-led sport and recreation programs to become self-sustaining.

The YSR teams also work with external providers including specialist coaches and facilitators to expand the range of activities. These have culminated into works of art including painted murals, dance workshops and performances as well as umpire and coaching accreditation programs.

An important part of the Sport and Recreation charter is the provision of pathways for those who excel within their chosen sporting or artistic pursuits. This has seen local community member’s develop their talents to progress to State and National levels within their chosen field. The Maningrida Dance Troupe are a great success story of this, recently winning a state-based competition in Queensland.

The provision of recreational opportunities also provides a positive outlet for the energies of the local youth with improved health and social outcomes. The team seeks to work with other stakeholders within the community to ensure a community-focused program and best use of resources.
