Waste and Sustainability
Community Sustainability
West Arnhem Regional Council is committed to developing a culture of sustainable practice. We recognise and champion the importance of safeguarding our environment for future generations by working collectively with community members, private enterprises, and all tiers of government.
From Kakadu National Park to Stone Country and all the way out to our remote island communities, our footprint encompasses some of the most unique natural environments in the world. Our residents are the caretakers of country and culture across the region and Council is committed to supporting the sustainable development of the region in partnership with the region’s traditional owners.
To support residents in managing waste effectively, community rubbish collections are scheduled regularly across the region. See schedules below.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Strategy 2024 - 2034
In April 2024, the Council endorsed the West Arnhem Regional Council’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Strategy 2024 - 2034. This strategy aligns with Pillar 5 of the Council’s strategic plan: Sustainability and Climate Action.
The strategy aims to achieve a 75% reduction in waste going to landfill by 2034 by prioritising:
- Waste reduction

- Recycling practices
Through this approach, West Arnhem Regional Council addresses the pressing issue of waste management while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among residents.
Key benefits include:
- Minimising landfill use
- Reducing pollution
- Conserving valuable resources
The strategy is also integral to driving local economic growth by:
