2023 started off with great training activities for staff at West Arnhem Regional Council. The Remote Trauma Course was successfully delivered in Maningrida by CareFlight and twelve members of the team attended and learned how to respond to trauma incidents. Kevin Voisey, Acting Council Services Manager at Maningrida, said “our staff enjoyed the training which was hands on and learned some new skills”.

Warruwi and Minjilang also participated in this activity late last year, so we are working on taking this course to the remaining communities this year.

It was so great to see community members, Elders and particularly the young ones shooting some hoops, enjoying the food and having a yarn together.  The fun afternoon was let the community know the doors to the centre are open and we are back running.
This was a huge effort by the team – thank you to everyone who joined us!

Ceremony to start Australia Day celebrations

West Arnhem’s vibrant communities celebrated Australia Day their own way in 2023 with special events held in Warruwi, Minjilang, Maningrida, Gunbalanya and Jabiru.

Gunbalanya

On Friday, 27 January, the community celebrated ‘Gunbalanya Day’ at the footy oval.

As soon as the event was set up, the kids started gathering around, eager to kick the footy and have a barbecue.
It was a relaxing afternoon with a steak and sausage sizzle, cool drinks and activities such as kicking the footy with community Elders and shooting marbles.

It was great to collaborate with Doug who runs the initiative ‘Stronger Communities For Children’ here in Gunbalanya, and he kindly supplied a chopped fruit board and icy poles for the kids.  Some of the teachers from Gunbalanya School came over to get involved and have a friendly yarn.  Overall it was a good day, with plenty of yarning and fun.

Special thanks to community Elders for coming down and getting involved with the kids, works staff for preparing the footy oval and sprinkler, CDP for lending the barbecue, Community Care for preparing onions and peppers and Doug from SCFC for the fruit and icy poles.

Warruwi

Meanwhile a number of cultural and recreational activities were planned for the 2023 Australia Day festivities at Warruwi.
The Traditional Owners, respected Elders and WARC staff promoted and assisted on the day.

There were around 120 people in attendance over the course of the day, with the majority staying well over two hours.
Activities included scratch basketball games, gymnastic equipment, traditional welcome and smoking ceremony, local dance and smoking Lore event with Traditional Owners, local musicians and community members.  There was also local dance from the Church group, painting and arts table for young people and lots of pancakes cooked for a ‘brunch’.   The most fun and best activity of the day was the slip and slide and colour run.

A big thanks to WARC staff especially Andie, Geri, Toni, Grace, Donna and Miriam for the effort behind the scenes and feeding a lot of people!

Minjilang

In Minjilang, the Council team turned the celebration into an End of Summer – back to school event held on Sunday, 29 January.
The event commenced with the Council Services Manager Cathy Makings doing an Acknowledgement to Country, and this was followed by great discussions on how the WARC Minjilang team want to work closely with the school and how important it was for students to attend school.

The team cooked heaps of sausages, followed by cakes, muffins, lollies and icy poles for everyone.  Tamyka was on-hand doing some face painting and the outdoor crew made up a slip and slide.  We also gave out hats and shirts we had on hand as well. It was a great relaxing afternoon and enjoyed by all.

WARC wishes to thank the Australia Day Council NT for supporting these events.

Maningrida oval lights - people viewing the finished project

The Maningrida community can be proud of the recently redeveloped football oval which was informally opened at the New Year’s Eve fireworks display on 31 December 2022.

The oval redevelopment has included significant works including resurfacing and realignment, new goal posts, upgraded irrigation, new fence and newly-installed light towers with lowerable light mast head.   These upgrades to the oval have been a long time coming and were strongly supported by the Maningrida Local Authority, Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI) and Northern Territory Government Department of Tourism and Culture.  With the project now complete, the community has access to a great space for not only to kick off the 2023 football season, but community events and gatherings. The new light poles also allows for night games, training and events, and will deliver long term savings due to the design.

The Maningrida football oval redevelopment commenced in 2020 following the release of the tender which was awarded to DEC Installations NT Pty Ltd.  Throughout the redevelopment, the project team were able to deliver the project milestones despite a number of underlying issues, caused by the existing oval being in an extremely tricky plot of land and its orientation and sizing not meeting the AFL international standards. Wet weather also affected not only the work on the ground but also the original footing design. The effect of an above average wet season and rising water table resulted in a complete redesign of footings for light poles.
This required an additional 270t of concrete being placed into the footings with 32mm reinforcement and 850t of cement stabilised sand weighing them down.

WARC required additional funding to complete works and were successful through the LRCI Phase 2 funding stream which resulted in delays and setbacks to project timeframes.  Despite this, WARC, DEC and engineers worked together over the last two years to complete the oval earth works, pumping station, irrigation, fencing and grass. The last major milestone in the final weeks prior to handover was the installation of the oval light-towers which have their own lowering system - a huge benefit in both cost and time for routine maintenance or repairs.  Jai Prolongeau of DEC Installations said in the weeks prior to handover in December 2023, DEC worked around the clock to exceed expectations and they wanted to thank all involved.

“Over the life of this project, DEC was able to engage many local suppliers, contractors and employers. Just DEC alone provided over 10,000 hours of employment to Indigenous staff members, plus many more provided through local contractors,” Jai said.
“We would like to thanks Stedman’s Construction and BAC for all of their local support throughout the project, as well as Dhukurrdji Lodge for taking such great care of our team. We would also like to thank the whole team at WARC, it has been a pleasure working with you and we look forward to working together again in future.”

Healthy Skin Week in Maningrida

Healthy Skin Week in Maningrida

Health professional talk about about skin with an indigenous woman

Mala'la Health Service recently coordinated Healthy Skin Week to promote early identification and treatment of skin infections in a bid to lower long term health conditions such as Acute Rheumatic Fever, Rheumatic Heart and Kidney Disease. Over five days, the dedicated crew of Aboriginal Community Health Workers, Nurses and Volunteer Doctors assessed and treated more than 1,200 people in Maningrida and outstations. Outreach clinics through late night shops, child and family centre and public spaces around the community provided extra points of access for the community.

Natasha Bond was involved in leading the community response with home-to-home visits and workshops to provide health information and support. "Rheumatic Heart Disease is a huge concern for our mob, we have the highest rates of RHD in the world. We want to encourage everyone to work on this together, get treatment straight away and stop further health complications".
In the lead up to Healthy Skin Week, West Arnhem Regional Council coordinated hard-rubbish collections with Stedman's also coming on board to provide Skip Bins at various sites. Maningrida College hosted multiple workshops with the school students from kindy to seniors' cohorts. These Workshops were delivered by the Mala'la team of Aboriginal Health Workers in-training, Natasha Bond and Eileen Gunabarra alongside Jennifer Damsey in Burarra and English languages.

As part of their special visit to Maningrida, Sydney Swans took part in workshops with Seniors to come up with a joint local campaign "Healthy Skin. Healthy Home. Healthy Heart".  The campaign was screened across the community throughout the week thanks to the Council's donation of the portable cinema screen.

Healthy Skin Week was delivered in partnership with Menzies School of Health and made possible through the generous sponsorship and support of Nja-marleya Cultural Leaders and Traditional Owners; Maningrida College; West Arnhem Regional Council; Stedman's; MPA; BAC; General Store; Menzies Medical Team;  Murnun Men's Space; The Child & Family Centre; Sydney Swans; Nawarddeken Academy; Top End Health

Community members are encouraged to continue to present to the clinic if there are any concerns about skin conditions.
