West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sport and Recreation teams (YSR) in Jabiru and Gunbalanya worked together to hold a Community Warddeken Youth Basketball Competition including Gunbalanya, Jabiru and Homelands Youth.
The competition was held as part of Healthy Skin Week and was made possible by a grant from Adjumarrlarl.
It ran with the 24 hour wash-a-thon hosted by Aboriginal Investment Group and Adjumarrlarl.
The competition, which was held on 6 and and 7 November, was very well-attended and made possible by Nathan Jawai and his team, the Jabiru YSR team, Gunbalanya YSR team, Lochie Mckenzie from Adjumarllarl and numerous other stakeholders involved in the 24-hour Wash-a-thon.
The Gunbalanya girls team won the female competition and the Jabiru boys team took out the male competition.
A number of skills events were also held between games and there were prizes including signed jerseys, shoes and basketballs from Nathan Jawai’s time in the NBA!
WARC YSR Officer Leah Holt-Narul said, “The first night I noticed we had about 150 people and then the next night we had way more. We almost had too many kids to fit into the teams! I think next year we can make it bigger and better and now we know it will be well received we can plan for that to make the next event even better than it was this year. It was a great event for the community of Gunbalanya as well as all the youth that travelled from Jabiru and homelands.”
Leah went on to say, “a highlight of the event for me was seeing all the parents come out to cheer on their children, it was a real whole of community event.”
