40 young men between the age of 12 - 17 years of age ventured onto Brockman Oval to take on the AFL 9's round robin carnival between Jabiru, Maningrida and Gunbalanya.

The exciting carnival was held during the school holidays.

Despite travelling the furthest Maningrida put forward two teams. Every team played each other once from Thursday afternoon concluding Friday lunchtime with Maningrida 2 taking on Gunbalanya in the grand final. Maningrida led at half time but Gunbalanya over run them in the second half claiming the cup.

When announcing the ‘best and fairest’ players at the end of the carnival it was noted that all players could have been awarded the fairest as everyone represented their Communities with distinction.

The idea of the carnival was a suggestion raised in the recent youth leadership summit that youth wanted inter-community competition so we delivered.

There are numerous benefits from this carnival which promoted and contributed to the health, social and emotional well-being of young people in West Arnhem Land.

It takes a lot of time and effort for this to happen so thank you to:

  • TeamHealth
  • Adjumarllarl Youth Diversion
  • Jabiru School
  • Red Lilly Health
  • Jabiru Bombers volunteers
  • Jabiru waterkids
  • AFL Maningrida AFL Development Officer
  • WARC Works crew

It was an absolute pleasure and hope to be back bigger and even better next time.
