Gunbalanya students attend NT Sports Carnival

Recently, West Arnhem Regional Council Sport and Recreation Officer Sam, alongside Jabiru Works Crew staff member Kingsley, travelled to Darwin to support students from Gunbalanya and Jabiru Schools who were participating in the 12 Years and Under NT School Sports competition.
The students were selected not only for their talent on the football field but also for their school attendance, commitment to training, and the positive choices they’ve made in their communities. During their stay at the picturesque Lee Point, the students quickly overcame initial nerves and began forming new friendships with kids from across the Top End.
Teaming up with students from Tiwi, Adelaide River, Palumpa, Croker, Maningrida and Humpty Doo, they formed male and female “Top End Remote” teams. Over the course of the competition, both teams played six games against sides representing Darwin, Top End Urban, East Arnhem and Central Australia.
It was a slow start, but with each match, teamwork and confidence grew. Both the boys and girls teams celebrated two strong wins each, learning valuable skills and gaining experience along the way. One official commented, “The Top End Remote boys were the best team to watch – they were just so much fun.”
Off the field, students were taught the basics of scoring and goal umpiring, taking on these roles during games when they weren't playing. Their involvement was enthusiastic and professional, earning praise from event organisers and coaches alike.
To cap off a fun-filled and rewarding trip, the group enjoyed a well-earned visit to Leanyer Water Park. As the competition wrapped up, the Gunbalanya students said goodbye to new friends before heading to the airport for their charter flight home.
A special congratulations goes to one Gunbalanya student who was selected as an emergency for the NT representative side – a testament to the effort and talent shown throughout the week.
