Maningrida day

The vibrant communities of West Arnhem are preparing to celebrate Australia Day with a variety of exciting events that reflect their unique cultures and community spirit. From Gunbalanya to Maningrida, each community has crafted activities to respect, reflect, and celebrate this special day in their own way.
In Gunbalanya, the festivities will kick off on Sunday, 26 January, at 5pm at the Oval. Community members can enjoy an evening of cultural performances, sporting events such as footy and basketball, fun runs, games, and community awards. The event promises something for everyone, with food and prizes.
In Warruwi, the community is set to gather at Warrow Hall at noon on the same day. The day will start with a Smoking Ceremony followed by Citizen of the Year Awards. Activities include traditional dancing, a tug-o-war, sprint games, a didgeridoo competition, and spear throwing. Families and children will also enjoy a colouring competition, water play, and a barbecue to bring everyone together.
In Minjilang, the celebration will begin at 11.30 AM with a barbecue lunch. This will be accompanied by children’s colouring competitions and fun water activities, creating a relaxed yet joyful atmosphere for everyone.
Maningrida Day will run from 1pm to 5pm at the Maningrida Pool. Activities include a kicking accuracy competition, three-legged races, a scavenger hunt, casting competitions, and pool fun. Community members can also look forward to cool prizes and a delicious barbecue lunch.
The Jabiru community will be holding their event on Saturday, 1 February, at the Jabiru Pool. The day begins at 2pm, following the Jabiru Bombers home games. Community members can enjoy a childcare zone, cricket matches, tug-o-war, races, thong tosses, and plenty of pool toys. A late lunch will be provided, and the Citizen of the Year Awards will be announced to honour outstanding members of the community.
These events are made possible through the support of the Australian Government, the National Australia Day Council, and the West Arnhem Regional Council.
Whether it’s cultural performances, sports, games, or traditional ceremonies, these celebrations showcase the diversity and unity of West Arnhem’s communities. With something for everyone, families and friends are encouraged to join in the free, inclusive festivities.
