Sportspeople from across West Arnhem Land will gather in Jabiru next month for the highly anticipated 2024 Kurrung Sports Carnival.

Proudly hosted by the West Arnhem Regional Council, this popular 2-day event brings together talented men and women from the five communities of Jabiru, Gunbalanya, Maningrida, Warruwi, and Minjilang.

The Kurrung Sports Carnival is an exciting event on the local calendar, fostering stronger community bonds and sense of belonging.
This year's carnival, scheduled for 30 and 31 August, promises an exciting line up of competitions, including:

  • A men’s AFL competition
  • Men’s and women’s basketball
  • A women’s AFL 9s contest

The inclusion of the women’s AFL 9s contest is a notable highlight, reflecting the growing interest in women’s football in the region.

The Council looks forward to showcasing this sport and providing the opportunity for girls and women of all age groups and skill levels to participate and represent their region in a family-friendly, culturally safe, competitive event.

Additionally, the carnival will feature a cultural dance performance known as Manyardi/Kunborrk, which will conclude the 2024 event. This was a highlight addition to the 2023 program which concluded the carnival on a very positive note.

Promoting and celebrating positive sportsmanship and fair play, the event will again feature the ‘Spirit of Kurrung’ cup, awarded to the Community which shows these key values.

For more information about the event, community members are encouraged to speak with their local Youth, Sport, and Recreation Officer.

And, if Jabiru locals are interested in volunteering at the two day event supporting the catering or sports events, please contact Lance Schmidt at the Council Office.
