West Arnhem Regional Council Mayor James Woods met with Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator Malarndirri McCarthy and Member for Lingiari Marion Scrymgour MP in Maningrida this week at the official launch of the Remote Food Security Strategy rollout for regional and remote communities.
Mayor Woods expressed his support of the strategy, stating, "The release of the Remote Food Security Strategy is a significant step forward for remote communities, which will no longer be forced to endure unacceptable food insecurity. Access to affordable food will improve the health and wellbeing of our communities."
The Minister’s visit also provided an opportunity to discuss key regional issues and showcase important Council-led projects in the community.
Accompanied by Member for Arafura Manuel Brown MLA and Council's Interim Chief Executive Officer Ben Waugh, Mayor Woods led a walk-through of the Maningrida changerooms development. Supported by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) and managed by the West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC), this exciting project is taking shape for the Maningrida community.
Mayor Woods appreciated the chance to sit down and discuss other topics with Minister McCarthy including the recently completed Maningrida airport structures designed specifically to support families during sorry business, economic development opportunities and additional funding for community safety initiatives, public lighting and road upgrades.
The meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration across all levels of government to deliver meaningful projects that improve the quality of life for residents in West Arnhem communities.
The Council thanks Minister McCarthy for this valuable opportunity.
