New YSR program structure off to a great start

West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sport & Recreation (YSR) team in Gunbalanya has kicked off 2026 with a fresh new approach - and it’s already showing great results.
Throughout January, YSR has been running age- and gender-specific activities, with programs now split into:
• Ages 5-10
• Ages 11-16
• Girls-only programs

This new structure has made a big difference. 
Sessions are more age-appropriate, group sizes are smaller, and staff are able to spend more time working hands-on with the kids and building positive relationships. 
We’re also seeing new faces coming through the door, which is fantastic.
Most importantly, the change allows YSR staff to be fully engaged, encouraging and supportive, rather than trying to manage large mixed groups. 
While the change took a little getting used to, the kids have been respectful and are doing a great job sharing time and space across the different groups.
It’s been a strong start to the year, and the Gunbalanya YSR team is excited to keep building on this momentum throughout 2026.
