MEDIA STATEMENT - Community Voices, Truth and Respect
From Mayor James Woods, West Arnhem Regional Council
Maningrida is a strong, diverse and culturally rich community. We are home to many language groups, deep cultural knowledge and strong families who look after one another, especially during the wet season.
Recent events have shown why it is more important than ever to listen to communities directly, rather than relying on rumours, assumptions or harmful narratives.
Listening means decisions are made by collaborating WITH communities, not about them. Governments must go bush, sit down, listen and work alongside people on the ground - not hide from remote communities when challenges arise.
We also call on media organisations to act responsibly. Reporting must be based on truth, community voices and verified information - not rumours, misleading images, racism, defamation or stories that escalate fear and division.
False or exaggerated reporting causes real harm. It damages reputations, increases tension, and unfairly paints whole communities in a negative light, particularly during the wettest time of the year when services are already under pressure.
The actions of a few do not define Maningrida. The majority of our people are respectful, law‑abiding and focused on caring for family, culture and community.
We expect transparency, accountability and respect from governments, agencies and the media. Communities have the right to accurate information, fair treatment and genuine partnership.
As Mayor, I stand with our Elders, leaders, families and young people. We will continue to work together to calm tensions, support safety and protect the dignity of our community.
Maningrida deserves to be heard - not misrepresented.
