MEDIA RELEASE - West Arnhem Regional Council appoints new Chief Executive Officer

Following a national recruitment campaign, West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Katharine Clare Murray as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Katharine brings extensive leadership experience as the CEO of multiple Indigenous organisations, along with a deep commitment to advancing WARC’s mission of delivering meaningful and lasting outcomes for remote communities.

Her appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the Council as it continues its journey of building stronger communities across the West Arnhem region. With fresh opportunities on the horizon, this is an important time for WARC to build on its successes and shape a thriving future.

Mayor James Woods extended a warm welcome to Katharine as the new Chief Executive.

“On behalf of Elected Members, we look forward to working with Katharine as she leads our Council into 2025 and beyond,” he said. 

“Her extensive experience and deep understanding of Indigenous communities will be invaluable as we continue delivering strong community-driven outcomes. Together, we will strengthen our West Arnhem communities, create meaningful opportunities for our people, and foster a future built on sustainable development. We look forward to walking together in both worlds.”

Katharine shared her enthusiasm for the role.

"Thank you Mayor and Council. I see this role as an exciting opportunity to bring my commitment to community led outcomes whereby Indigenous voices are at the centre of decision making, balancing cultural, social and economic priorities. I will be focusing on building a strong engaged workforce that will meet Council and community needs, increasing economic sustainability, enhancing service delivery to meet community needs and building strong partnerships with government and private sector partnerships," she said.

Katharine takes on the leadership role from former CEO Andrew Walsh who resigned earlier this year.

Mayor Woods acknowledged Andrew’s significant contributions during his tenure.

“Our Council and communities are strong. Andrew’s leadership and dedication to working alongside community have played a key role in shaping WARC’s journey to this point.”

Katharine will officially commence in the role on 28 April 2025.
