West Arnhem Regional Council extends huge gratitude and thanks to Mayor Matthew Ryan who has officially stepped down as Mayor but will remain on Council as an Elected Member.

Matthew’s decision follows the announcement that he was elected as Chairperson of the Northern Land Council (NLC) earlier this week.

Matthew has been a fierce advocate for the constituents of the West Arnhem Communities for two decades, serving as a Councillor for the Maningrida Ward since 2008 and as Mayor since 2017.

As Mayor, he has led with strength, tenacity and with an unparalleled commitment to fight for positive change for Aboriginal people.

He has been a leading voice for promoting Aboriginal rights and a representative for those who have been forgotten and remain disadvantaged.

Over the years, Matthew has campaigned at the highest levels for the issues which affect remote communities including health, electoral participation, telecommunications, education and empowering Aboriginal people through constitutional change.

Matthew’s leadership has left a lasting legacy, not only in the West Arnhem Communities but also in broader regional and national discussions.

His involvement in critical matters, including the National Referendum Engagement Group and the Senate Inquiry into the sunsetting of the Stronger Futures legislation, showcases his commitment to ensuring Aboriginal voices are heard at the highest levels.

As Matthew commences his new role as Chairperson of the Northern Land Council, it's evident that his passion for promoting Aboriginal rights and empowering Communities will continue to make a positive impact across the NLC regions.

He is a true leader who has truly made a difference to the lives of many.

On behalf of the constituents of West Arnhem Communities, West Arnhem Regional Council Elected Members and staff express gratitude for Matthew's achievements and successes as Council’s Mayor.
