Local Collaboration Ensures Accessible Swimming for All

Recently, Country Connect Foundation and West Arnhem Regional Council teamed up to ensure that a community member with mobility challenges could enjoy a fulfilling day at the Jabiru Town Pool.
Thanks to their combined efforts, the client was able to access the pool with ease using a hoist lift, marking a significant step forward in making community facilities more accessible for everyone.
Country Connect Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that provides essential wellbeing and youth services in remote and regional areas of Australia. They prioritise culturally safe and appropriate care, connecting individuals to country, culture, and community. By offering holistic support, Country Connect Foundation helps individuals lead healthier, happier lives while fostering strong community connections.
After assessing the client’s needs and the existing pool facilities, it was clear that the hoist lift would be the key to ensuring safe and easy access. West Arnhem Regional Council staff provided technical and pool safety support, whilst Country Connect Foundation provided the necessary assistance to ensure the client could enjoy a smooth and enjoyable experience in the water.
The outcome was nothing short of successful. The client was not only able to access the pool in a safe and comfortable manner but also had an amazing time swimming, an activity that is so crucial at this time of the year given the high temperatures and humidity.
“This is what community support is all about,” said Damien Conboy from Country Connect Foundation. “Our goal is to make sure that everyone has equal opportunities to participate in recreational activities. Today, it was wonderful to see how collaboration can make a real difference.”
West Arnhem Regional Council's Pool team leader Barbara Murray also praised the joint effort. “We're thrilled to have played a role in this collaboration. Accessible facilities are essential for creating a fully inclusive community, and it’s so rewarding to see our efforts lead to such a positive outcome for this individual.”
The success of this initiative demonstrates the power of working together to break down barriers and ensure that everyone has access to community amenities. Both organisations are committed to continuing their efforts to improve accessibility and ensure that all residents can fully participate in local life.
With this milestone achieved, Country Connect Foundation and the West Arnhem Regional Council are now looking forward to further improving accessibility at other local facilities, hoping to inspire more positive change in the community.
For those who may need assistance, Country Connect is available to provide support and help navigate the services available in the Northern Territory.
