Jabiru Town Square Revitalisation

Jabiru Town Plaza revitalisation

The Jabiru Town Square Revitalisation project is well underway, bringing a fresh look and vibrant energy to the heart of Jabiru. Initiated by the Jabiru Property Services in early 2024, this community-focused effort aims to transform the town square into an inviting space for both residents and tourists.
The project has been a collaborative effort, with coordination led by Jabiru Property Services, Rio Tinto, and the Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet. As the license holder for maintaining the area, the West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) has played a significant role, contributing manpower and resources.
One of the early steps in the revitalisation was the removal of three garden beds to create open areas that will soon be with new turf. WARC's efforts to prepare the space were funded through an Activate NT grant, which enabled the purchase of soft furnishings, umbrellas, chairs, and mats. These additions will transform the area into a welcoming gathering place during the Dry Season.
A giant toy box, another exciting feature of the revitalisation, has also been secured for the plaza, offering a touch of fun for children and families.
The transformation of the town square has truly been a community effort. On Tuesday, December 3, Kakadu Native Plants installed irrigation systems for the newly cleared areas. Later in the week, on Friday, December 6, the community came together to lay the turf.
It was great to see students from Clontarf, community groups, and volunteers rolling up their sleeves to contribute. GAC-JT Chief Operating Officer Owain Dunn, joined in the effort alongside May Brazil from the Ranger Rehabilitation Project, WARC’s Council Services Manager in Jabiru, and dedicated WARC works officers.
Special thanks go to Peter ‘Christo’ Christophersen and his team from Kakadu Native Plants, who guided the volunteers through the process. Despite the hard work, the day was filled with camaraderie, laughter, and a shared sense of purpose.
With these significant milestones achieved, the revitalised town square is shaping up to be a vibrant centerpiece of Jabiru life. As work continues, the community can look forward to a space that reflects their spirit and hospitality, offering a warm welcome to visitors and locals.
This project is a testament to what can be achieved when community members and organisations come together with a shared vision. The Jabiru Town Square Revitilisation is more than just a facelift—it’s a celebration of community pride and collaboration.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to bring this exciting project to life!
