Communities to unite at Kurrung Sports Carnival
Sports teams across the region are gearing up for the highly anticipated 2024 Kurrung Sports Carnival which will be held in Jabiru on 30 and 31 August 2024.
In this year’s program, the carnival will consist of men’s and women’s teams competing in the basketball and AFL competitions and a women’s AFL 9’s round, all hoping to take home the overall winning trophy to their community.
The Kurrung Sports Carnival, hosted by West Arnhem Regional Council, is an exciting event on the local calendar, fostering stronger community bonds and sense of belonging.
West Arnhem Regional Council Mayor James Woods said sport and recreation plays a special role within the West Arnhem region.
“Through the Kurrung Sports Carnival, teams are given the opportunity to showcase their talents and represent their Communities with pride and respect,” Mayor Woods said.
“The carnival is more than just sport – it represents our Communities uniting for a common purpose and sharing the same values.”
The carnival also promotes strong partnerships with stakeholders in the West Arnhem region, and Council is excited to announce that TEABBA radio will be broadcasting live from event venues over the two days. Communities are encouraged to tune into TEABBA to listen to the scores, interviews and leaderboards during the carnival.
Long-time and valuable partner, the NO MORE Campaign will once have a presence at the carnival. To promote and celebrate positive fair play, respect and camaraderie on and off the field, the NO MORE team will award the ‘Spirit of Kurrung’ cup to the Community which shows these key values.
Additionally, the carnival will feature a cultural dance performance known as Manyardi/Kunborrk, which will conclude the 2024 event. This was a highlight addition to the 2023 program which concluded the carnival on a very positive note.
For more information about the event, community members are encouraged to speak with their local Youth, Sport, and Recreation Officer. Team registrations close on Wednesday, 21 August 2024.
