Celebrating National NAIDOC Week in 2026

This Sunday marks the beginning of National NAIDOC Week celebrations across Australia, held annually during the first full week of July (Sunday to Sunday). As we prepare to celebrate, West Arnhem Regional Council Mayor James Woods has shared the following message with our communities:

“The 2026 NAIDOC theme, ‘50 Years of Deadly,’ marks a significant milestone in the history of this national celebration. Within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the word deadly signifies excellence, strength, and deep pride - values that are reflected throughout five decades of NAIDOC. 
For 50 years, NAIDOC has provided a platform for truth telling, cultural celebration, and self determination, led by First Nations communities. It honours the leadership of Elders and changemakers, and recognises the resilience and determination that have sustained cultures and communities across generations. 
This theme acknowledges both the history that has shaped the present and the strength and leadership that continue to guide the path forward.”
