Minjilang School Holiday Program
West Arnhem Regional Council’s Sport and Recreation Team in Minjilang recently hosted a hands-on cooking session with youth participants, preparing kangaroo tails. This event not only offered a unique opportunity for the youth to connect with their elders to learn the skills of preparing bush tucker in traditional methods but also emphasised the importance of healthy eating and sustainable practices. This included kangaroo tail, a rich source of lean protein, iron, and essential nutrients, supports physical health and wellbeing by providing the body with energy and aiding muscle repair.
Incorporating such foods into daily life fosters a deeper understanding of the nutritional value of bush tucker, which has sustained generations for thousands of years. The preparation of kangaroo tails allows young participants to learn about the land, its offerings, and the cultural significance of food in traditional practices. This experience creates a strong sense of identity, while promoting mental, emotional, and social wellbeing through shared cooking and storytelling. It is a powerful reminder of the connection between food, culture, and the environment, inspiring a holistic approach to health and community.
Wellbeing Services Coordinator Aden Reeves said, “This was a fantastic experience with an amazing group of participants and staff. The way the youth participants immersed themselves in the experience and listened to staff regarding correct preparation and cooking methods was impressive. The feed of freshly cooked kangaroo tails and Damper afterwards was the reward!”
