Local Authority finds its voice in Maningrida

THE need for a community morgue was one of the first items raised at the first meeing of the newly formed Maningrida Local Authority, held at the West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) offices in Maningrida on 16 July. The Maningrida Local Authority members elected Baru Pascoe as Chairperson and Bernadette Yibarbuk as Deputy Chair. Local Authority meetings are also due to be held in Gunbalanya on 2 July and Warruwi and Minjilang on 6 August. WARC provides secretarial assistance at the meetings and lends a close ear to the concerns of the community. Through the meetings, the Local Authorities have a direct say in how council funds are spent in their communities.Read more

Strong showing for Warruwi finals

JUST about everyone from Warruwi was there. Kids painted their faces, wore t-shirts with the colours and names of their favourite teams, and kids at the Warruwi Creche made a huge banner for the event. Held on Saturday 21 June, the Warruwi basketball finals was a huge event. Sparks-Wunyun won the Women's finals, with Mardbalk Cats scratching out a win in the Men's.Read more

JABIRU locals are rallying around local firefighter Mick Hutton as he prepares to join a round- Australia trek in the Black Dog Ride, raising money for Lifeline and awareness of depression and suicide prevention. Locals rein in troublesome croc

TRADITIONAL owners removed this 4.5m crocodile from the town billabong at Gunbalanya early on the morning of Thursday 3 July. The crocodile had reportedly been taking dogs and cattle and its presence at a popular fishing spot had been described by one local as “a recipe for disaster”.Read more

High drama at Cahill's Crossing

A woman is lucky to be after her vehicle was swept off Cahill's Crossing amid rising tidal waters on the East Alligator River. Neville Namarnyilk, at the helm of the Kakadu Cultural Tours boat Guluyambi , which came to the rescue of the woman, says he was guided to the scene of the near-disaster by a marrawadi , or spirit animal.Read more

Ancient tales bring art to life

A new initiative is getting rave reviews as Njanjma Rangers offer a fresh interpretation of the Alligator River rock art region. "For a long time there's been a heavy reliance of Balanda (European descent) guides to interpret Kakadu's World Heritage area," says Njanjma coordinator Trent Wilkinson. "But now the traditional owners of Ubirr have stepped up and taken on the daily task of guiding visitors around the occupation site, and interpreting both the ancient and contemporary paintings which adorn the rock shelters where Bininj people lived for thousands of years."Read more
