THE Tiwi Islands Regional Council (TIRC) and the West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) are working more closely together after an initiative of WARC Mayor Lothar Siebert came to fruition last week. Mayor Siebert invited the TIRC Mayor and Councillors to attend an Ordinary Council Meeting at the WARC Chambers in Jabiru on Wednesday 10 September. Attending the meeting were TIRC Mayor Lynette De Santis, Councillors Anita Moreen and Lesley Tungatalum, and Chief Executive Officer Alan Hudson.Read more

PEOPLE came flooding in from all over Arnhem Land. From the outstations around Jabiru. From Yirrkala and Galiwinku in the east, to Warruwi, Maningrida, Minjilang and Gunbalanya in the west. For two days, throughout the the Gurrung Sports Carnival and long into the night of the Mahbilil Festival, Jabiru, in the heart of Kakadu National Park, was home to a thriving hub of activity. One surprise announcement in the short build-up to Mahbilil was the extremely popular inclusion of the Djuki Mala dance group, or Chooky Dancers. Mandy Garling kicked off the musical acts, which also included Neville Namarnjilk, the Mimi Band, the Bininj Band and The Minjilang Connection, along with performances from Kindred Circus, Bininj Gunborrk and Gunbalanya Dancers. Plus there was the headline act, East Journey, all the way from Yirrkala in East Arnhem Land.Read more

The 2014 Gurrung Sports Carnival is over for another year, with hundreds of competitors travelling home to their communities. Some will be carry trophies, some will be carrying bruises and battered pride – but all competitors will be carrying with them memories of a great couple of days of sport and sportsmanship.Read more

THE efforts of triathletes competing in Kakadu are helping keep our CareFlight choppers in the air, with money raised in the second annual Kakadu Triathlon, held in Jabiru on Saturday 31 May, handed over to CareFlight in Darwin on Monday 8 September.Read more

The excitement is building in the lead-up to the Gurrung Sports Carnival, two days of sensational sport set against the stunning backdrop of the West Arnhem escarpment. Games in the popular, grass-roots football and basketball competition will get underway from 4pm Friday 5 September. Hot on the heels winning the Award for Film Clip of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards, East Journey will be playing the headline slot at the Mahbilil Festival in Jabiru, in the heart of Kakadu National Park. The explosive nine-piece act from Yirrkala, which formed in 2010, incorporates a unique fusion of rock, acoustic, traditional yidaki (didg) and bilma (clapsticks), as well as singing in both English and Yolngu Matha.Read more

To support this year’s Black Dog Ride, the West Arnhem Regional Council hosted a community breakfast at Lake Jabiru Park on Monday August 4 to welcome riders including Jabiru Fire Station OIC Mick Hutton. The free breakfast helped build social links for riders, community members, and community groups while raising vital funds for mental health services. On behalf of West Arnhem Regional Council, Councillor Peter Wilson presented Mick Hutton with a painting of Adjumallarl (Dog Dreaming). The artwork, by Joey Nganjmirra, is from Injalak Arts and Crafts Association in Gunbalanya. Cr Wilson praised the efforts of the Black Dog Ride in raising more than $1.5 million for mental health services while fostering awareness of depression and suicide prevention. “Mick from the Jabiru Fire Brigade has helped by raising in excess of three-and-a-half thousand dollars, which is remarkable.” Cr Wilson said.Read more

Minjilang held its first official Local Authority meeting at the council meeting room on Croker Island on Friday 8 August, following on from successful meetings at Gunbalanya and Maningrida. The members present elected William Noinba as their chairman before getting down to the business of discussing local issues and ideas.Read more

The 2014 Gurrung Sports Carnival will be held in Jabiru – against the backdrop of the magnificent Kakadu National Park – on 5 and 6 September 2014. Since its beginnings in 2010, Gurrung has built its reputation on drawing footy and basketball teams from far and wide, displaying some of the greatest up-and-coming raw talent in the Top End. The Gurrung Sports Carnival will run in conjunction with this year's Mahbilil Festival.Read more
