Youth capture beauty of Maningrida

23 January 2018

Young people in Maningrida had the opportunity to learn some exciting new skills by participating in photography workshops last month.
Amy Hetherington, who ran the workshops with West Arnhem Regional Council, said the idea behind the activity was to encourage young people to get confident with cameras, learn new skills and capture what they love about living in Maningrida.
“There was so much to love! From being awesome sports photographers to talented nature photographers the young people of Maningrida brought their A game to these workshops.
Amy said as a first time visitor to the community she was overwhelmed by how beautiful it is and how kind and welcoming everyone was - it made capturing amazing photos so easy.
The workshop involved working with the Maningrida School, Women Rangers, Youth Services and heaps of young people to create a great exhibition of photos which were shared at the Christmas concert.

Comments from those who took part have been positive with Joyce Bohme saying, “I feel more confident about using a camera. Amy showed us how to be creative to take photos which made it really fun. She taught us to use natural lines and focus on an object. I had a great experience; would love to do it again.”
Meanwhile, Roseanne Darcy said, “At the start I felt scared to use the camera but after the training I felt excited to take photos. It was lots of fun. Amy helped us to feel confident.”
Felina Campion also said, “After the training with Amy, I feel confident to use our work camera properly and take photos for our biosecurity work. It was Gamak.”
“All in all it was a brilliant experience and I hope everyone involved learnt a bit about photography. Maningrida you are amazing,” Amy said.
