Wild weather whips Warruwi

07 November 2014

The rains and wild weather have arrived with a bang in West Arnhem. On Warruwi, storms on Wednesday 5 November brought down transmission lines, with power going out from 5am.

West Arnhem Regional Council Services Manager Kupa Teao said the power cut happened after one of the transmission lines along a street in Warruwi snapped and fell to the ground.

“The lines along the ground were sparking, making it extremely dangerous," Kupa said.

"Police arrived and cordoned off the road, until the power was eventually turned off. Power and Water arrived about an hour later and were onto the job. Unfortunately, one of the main water bores also shut off because of the power cut, adding more problems.

“All credit to the community, who were able to cope with no power for most of the day."

Kupa said the power was back by 3.40pm, but the water supply took a little longer.

“It's our first rain during the start of the wet season, and I know it has only started, but let’s hope we do not get too many power failures,” he said.
