An exciting school holiday program, involving hip hop workshops, will kick off in Minjilang on December 12.
Morganics’ Hip Hop Workshop will operate through a series of workshops held over 10 days, and will see youth learning dance moves, music, rhyming and will have them creating their own dance routine and songs.
The workshops will be held at the Minjilang Recreation Hall and scenic parts of the island community and will be facilitated by mentors hip hop artist Morganics, WIRE MC and filmmaker Finton Mahoney.
With the assistance of their mentors, the participants will perform their own routine which will be recorded, with the youth learning how to shoot and edit a video at the same time.
They will also learn how to beat box, breakdance and rap and learn the history of Hip Hop culture both internationally and locally with a focus on indigenous content along the way.
West Arnhem Regional Council Youth Development Coordinator Jessica Green said the Morganics’ Hip Hop Workshop is set to be an exciting school holiday program in Minjilang which engages youth, aged 8-18, through music and dance.
The workshops will conclude with a disco with the workshop participants showcasing their work as they perform it in front of the Minjilang community.
“With the help from their mentors, the kids will have their own video clips which they made themselves, and they will have the chance to show them to the community, families and friends,” Jessica said.
At the end of the workshops participants will have their own CDs of their songs (including instrumentals so they can perform live) and a DVD with their video clips.
Promoting school attendance and encouraging students to return and value schooling is a key priority with the music videos made through the program.
