Minjilang brings language into music

13 January 2017

Youth, Sport and Rec staff Amelia, Matthew and the stars of ‘Welcome to Minjilang’.

Minjilang has been a hit on social media recently following a visit from Morganics, Wire MC and video artist Finton Mahony who travelled to Croker Island for 10 days of hip hop workshops during the December holidays.
Morganics worked closely with Minjilang’s Mamaruni School to create a music video ‘Welcome to Minjilang’ and samples the major languages spoken on the Island including Mawng, Kunwinjku and English. In the chorus of the song recorded the greeting ‘hello’ is in all three languages.
The video has received a huge amount of support through social media within a day of sharing the video it has reached thousands of views with great feedback.
West Arnhem Regional Council Youth Development Coordinator Jessica Green said the Morganics’ Hip Hop Workshop was an exciting school holiday program in Minjilang which engages youth, aged 8-18, through music and dance.
Morgan Lewis from the program said the video clip has, “Really taken off online, especially when you embed videos directly into Facebook - something I researched and learnt recently. It is currently at 4.8k views on Facebook and 375 on YouTube, it’s gotten a great reaction, touched a nerve, people love the vibe and energy of the kids I think, and the drone shots and the croc sure helped I’m sure”.
Many thanks to Morganics, Wire MC and Finton, the young people in the program, teachers and community as well as West Arnhem Regional Council and Prime Minster and Cabinet for funding the program.
Thanks also goes to everyone who helped make great memories for the community of Minjilang. Promoting school attendance under Prime Minister and cabinets funding agreement with West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth Programs.
