Maningrida's mud brick factory recommences

CDP Mud Brick factory Supervisor Timmy Kula Kula had the honour of turning on the switch at the opening ceremony on April 24.

A historic construction method has recommenced in Maningrida, creating local jobs and using local materials.
Making bricks for housing has a long history in the West Arnhem community, and with funding assistance from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Bawinanga Mud Brick Factory is back under way.
With the use of the new fully electronic Modular Brick Factory, local Indigenous people have gained employment and currently several local Community Development Program (CDP) participants are getting trained up by Rob Freeland.
Bawinanga had a grand opening of the factory on April 24 with Minister of Indigenous Affairs and other honoured guests celebrating the return of making bricks locally.
The Bawinanga Mud Brick Factory has produced compressed earth bricks and pavers for over 25 years.
Many of the houses and buildings in Maningrida and the surrounding homelands are built from the distinctive red bricks.
