RESIDENTS of Maningrida are no strangers to cyclones, with Tropical Cyclone Monica tearing through the West Arnhem community in April 2006, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. So cyclone preparedness is something the Manigrida community takes seriously.

With that in mind, the West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) got together with other agencies in the community to run the first Maningrida Community Clean-Up Competition recently.

WARC Services Manager in Maningrida Adam Cornell says prizes up for grabs included washing machines, refrigerators and DVD players.

“This was organised by the Malabam Health Board, with help from RJCP the West Arnhem Regional Council,” Mr Cornell said. Families in Bottom Camp, Side Camp and the new subdivision in Maningrida cleaned up yards, with council works crews removing collected rubbish that could pose a hazard in cyclonic winds. “We had a huge amount of success this year, and are going to make it an annual event,” Mr Cornell said.

Malabam Health Board Remote Public Health Officer Roland Faber joined with the local constabulary and job service providers to present the main prizes on Friday 19 September. “Malabam Health Board would like to take this opportunity to express their sincere gratitude to the West Arnhem Regional Council for their invaluable contribution to the Maningrida Community Clean-up Competition,” Mr Faber said.
