Kakadu Triathlon returns in 2018

06 April 2018

The sixth annual Kakadu Triathlon will be back in 2018 with a new date of Saturday, 2 June, and though the event will take place slightly later, it is guaranteed to be just as exciting, colourful and entertaining this year.

2018 will serve as a transition year for the event which sees a changeover of management from Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) including previous event coordinator Leona Katzer, to West Arnhem Regional Council.

Despite this changeover, the event will run in the same format involving the open triathlon and duathlon and the junior racing skills with the event circuit incorporating the town pool, streets of Jabiru and the duathlon bike race leg going out to the Ranger Mine and back. The triathlon and duathlon includes those over 14 years of age and the junior skills events are for those under 14 (ages as at 31 December 2017.

The triathlon always attracts a great number of participants and event organisers wish to let past and new competitors know that though this year’s event date may not suit everyone, it will go back to its original time of early May in 2019.

West Arnhem Regional Council Chief Executive Officer Brian Hylands said the Kakadu Triathlon continues to be a standout event for the Jabiru community which also brings competitors from around the Northern Territory to Kakadu National Park.

“This is an exciting transition and West Arnhem Regional Council is proud to take on the event which confirms that the triathlon will be around for a long time to come,” he said.

“Thanks must also go to those previously involved in the event including organisers, volunteers and competitors, and we hope to see you all again on Saturday, 2 June.”

As well as bringing the community together and enticing visitors to Kakadu, the event has raised in excess of $50,000 for CareFlight helicopter rescue service over the past five years, with almost $15,000 raised in 2017.

The coordinating committee wishes to thank all the generous sponsors and volunteers.
