Injalak Arts reaches goal to produce new line of ethical footwear

Injalak Arts is celebrating the success of their latest Pozible crowdfunding campaign which concluded on May 1 for their first batch of Injalak Ethical Arts Thongs.
Raising more than $20,000 from supporters, the art centre reached their target goal to produce the unique thongs in partnership with Etiko, an award winning Australian fair-trade company.
The thongs feature designs by Injalak Arts’ artists Benson (Isaiah) Nagurrgurrba, Graham Badari and Gabriel Maralngurra, who are all thrilled to be a part of the new venture.
Co-Manager and artist Benson (Isaiah) Nagurrgurrba said, “We love these thongs. It is really good if people can wear real Aboriginal designs, not fake ones.”
Now the goal has been reached, the thongs will be available from July 2017 with plans for Injalak Arts to sell them from their own retail outlets and also wholesale them in the Top End.
The project came about when members of Injalak Arts decided it was time to offer an alternative from unauthorised Indigenous style designs and began talks with Etiko.
Injalak Ethical Art Thongs are made from a mix of natural and recycled rubber by a fair trade manufacturer in India and will be comfortable and hard-wearing.
