Get set for Gurrung Sports Carnival

15 August 2017

More than 25 teams will compete in the 8th annual Gurrung Sports Carnival, taking place in Jabiru on Friday, August 25 to Sunday, August 27.
Competitors from Jabiru, Gunbalanya, Maningrida, Beswick, Darwin, Minjilang and Warruwi will go head to head to contest the prestigious Gurrung Sports Carnival trophies over three huge days.
Hosted by West Arnhem Regional Council, Gurrung Sports Carnival features the men’s AFL competition as well as men’s and women’s basketball games with hundreds of participants across the sports.
With its popularity growing, this year sees the introduction of a new touch footy competition which has four teams registered to compete.
Always a huge weekend for Jabiru, Gurrung Sports Carnival will once again run in conjunction with the Mahbilil Festival which will kick off on Saturday, August 26 with plenty of music and entertainment on offer.
West Arnhem Regional Council Sport and Recreation Coordinator Seide Ramadani said this year’s event is shaping up to be an exciting carnival; not only with the introduction of the touch football competition, but Council is also proud to showcase the newly-resurfaced Jabiru courts.
“The courts look fantastic and we can’t wait to get the basketball competitions under way with Jabiru Heat coming back to defend their five year reign as champions in the hotly-contested men’s basketball. Training is also under way in Maningrida, Minjilang and Warruwi to select the women’s basketball teams and the Sport and Recreation teams in all communities are making sure everything is organised,” Seide said.
The men’s AFL competition will also deliver a full day of action with 10 teams registered this year. In the competition line up, the Minjilang team will return to contest their defending champion’s title which they have retained over the last five years in the men’s AFL.
Meanwhile, the women’s basketball competition is looking close with the return of reining champions Warruwi Mardbalk Cats well into the training schedule to defend their title.
Jabiru Heat will once again face some strong competition from Warruwi, Minjilang and St John’s College in the men’s basketball competition.
Gurrung Sports Carnival will kick off with the women’s basketball competition on Friday at 3.30pm and the men’s basketball starting from 5.00pm at the Jabiru courts. The men’s grand final and presentations will follow at around 8.30pm.
Saturday will see the start of the AFL competition from 8am at the Brockman Oval, and the women’s basketball continuing from 8.30am at Jabiru Area School.
Official presentations will be held at approximately 6.00pm at the oval.
Gurrung Sports Carnival is proudly hosted by West Arnhem Regional Council and gives young sportspeople the chance to participate in the top end’s largest regional sports event, in Kakadu National Park.
West Arnhem Regional Council would like to thank our wonderful sponsors for their generosity.
